Introduction to SD-WAN

The use of SD-WAN does not stop us from using MPLS, due to the nature of SD-WAN, SD-WAN can work with different WAN technologies. However, using MPLS might introduce few barriers to introducing hybrid enterprise networks which cloud-based technologies.

SD-WAN automates creating Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnels between multiple sites. Unlike traditional VPN, SD-WAN allows scalability, gives us more flexibility, visibility and control to the traffic traversing through the tunnel as well as faster detection (than traditional VPN) to tunnel connectivity issues and/or performance degradation.

How Does SD-WAN Work?

SD-WAN works by abstracting and virtualizing the underlying network hardware, allowing businesses to use cheaper and more flexible Internet connections (such as broadband, 4G/5G, or even Wi-Fi) instead of expensive private connections. Here’s how it works:

It’s also much easier to add new branch offices or remote users as SD-WAN introduces multiple solutions to automate the work such the use of Templates and Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP).
